What to expect?

As I announced last week, in November I informed the TSS Board of Directors of my decision to transition from TSS in June 2021 when we anticipate the global pandemic to begin easing. We anticipate this timing, coupled with an intentional selection process, to result in a smooth change of TSS executive leadership at TSS. During these six months, I will be focused on solidifying the more resilient structure we’ve built, maintaining financial stability, and poising TSS to rise to the next opportunities post-COVID all to set up the organization and the next Executive Director to thrive.

Notably, during this process, my role is not to participate deeply in the search process itself nor to have any authority in the next hiring decision. Per both standard practice and TSS bylaws, it is the role of the Board of Directors to lead the search process and make the ultimate selection decision. Earlier this week, the TSS Board made the decision to use an external hiring firm to support the hiring process. Search firms enable robust stakeholder engagement, help build a clear profile for the next Executive Director, and can make sure we have both a diverse and large candidate pool.

Staff and other TSS stakeholders will play an important role in the selection process. In January, as the Board of Directors finalizes their search committee and selects a search firm, you can expect more information to come regarding timeline, process, and means to engage. While an Executive Director transition at an organization is important, there is no urgent action to be done on the part of staff right now. If you have questions or just want to say “hi”, please join the Zoom call “time with Chris” this morning (Dec 18) at 10:30 am.

For many TSS staff, the next couple weeks give people time and space to take a step back. For some, specifically our Wildlife Expeditions staff, the next few weeks can be our peak winter season (thank you!). Please know that there will be specific asks and means to engage in the search process as it unfolds in the coming months. The only ask right now is for all of you to enjoy the winter holiday season, recharge your batteries, and stay warm through these long cold nights. Happy Solstice, happy winter, happy holidays.
